Silverwind Farm is a 500 acre farm located in the Strzelecki Ranges in Mirboo, Gippsland.

In 2016 we made the tree change to start our journey on the farm which then was 47 acres. It started as a hobby farm with an Alpaca called Acey, a ram called Bobby and a couple of cows and sheep. This was enough for a few city slickers to learn a completely different way of life, a farm life. We began to learn from our own experiences and that of our our neighbours. We learnt about life and death and everything in between and the best part about it is that we continue to learn everyday. As we learnt the ways of conventional farming, we began to see the reliance on chemicals to make pastures grow, the reliance on chemicals to keep our animals “healthy” and the reliance on chemicals to keep weeds away. It was then that we started our journey to rid our farm of this reliance with the simply question “Why?”. Why would chemicals, healthy and growth be put in the same sentence? It just doesn’t make sense. So we went searching for sense and that is when we found Joel Salatin and our world and farm changed forever! He introduced us to environmentally responsible, ecologically beneficial, sustainable agriculture. With this change in philosophy, our animals are actually healthy, our pastures grow and the weeds…. well the weeds continue but as our soil heals the weeds will be easier to manage, until then we continue to reduce weeds with a little muscle and smarter animal rotation (definitely not with goats and their explorative ways but that is another story!).

Today, we run Murrey Grey and Angus cattle over our 500 acres along with a few sheep, a couple of pigs and a handful of ducks, chickens and geese. We have taken back control of our beef and moved away from the traditional commercial supply chain and now can ensure our animals are respected their whole life and only have one bad day. Silverwind Farm is now truely a paddock to plate farm. The benefits of this vision is the control of an ethically grown and produced product that we can share with our community.
